The ''MOP'' dial (also known as mother-of-pearl) is made from a natural material sourced from the inside of shells, particularly oysters and other mollusks. The shimmer is impressive: iridescent, with subtle color changes depending on how the light hits it. In fact, the dial is hardly captureable in photos; you really have to see it in person! The beautiful MOP dial is also framed with diamond indexes.

With the introduction of the Datejust, the iconic five-piece Jubilee bracelet was also launched. Initially only in solid gold, later also in bicolor. Buyers at the time could choose between a Jubilee or an Oyster bracelet, although the latter is rarely found with the Datejust 16233. This example perfectly shows how an elegant vintage Datejust should be: the combination of a steel case, an 18K yellow gold bezel, the unique MOP dial, and the gold-steel Jubilee bracelet create a stylish and iconic appearance.

This beautiful (neo)vintage Rolex Datejust 16233 MOP dates from 2001 and is in stunning condition. The watch was sold in 2003. Almost unbelievable that such an example has been in the showcase for two years! The 36 mm steel case with 18K yellow gold fluted bezel is still razor sharp. The period-correct Jubilee bracelet shows slight stretch but is still in good condition. The reliable Rolex caliber 3135 has had a service.

Rolex

In 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex under reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also indicated the date and automatically changed after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with a fluted bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet that was specially designed for the Datejust. The date was displayed at the 3 o'clock position. 10 years later, in 1955, the date window was equipped with a cyclops lens that magnified the date by up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic models of Rolex were produced to be used as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purposes. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and everyday watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.
