Rolex Datejust 16234 'Black Dial' - Box & Papers (2002)
After the 160XX reference series entered the market in 1977, Rolex introduced the 162XX reference series 11 years later, in 1988, and continued producing it until around 2006. The 3035 caliber was replaced by the 3135 caliber, which was further perfected. This caliber was Rolex’s longest-used movement. Rolex also stopped using Plexiglas, and the 162XX Datejust series was fitted with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. In the late 1990s, Rolex stopped using tritium and, from 2000 onward, fitted all dials with Super-LumiNova, as on this black dial.
It’s fair to say that over the years, a wide range of different dial variations have appeared for the Datejust. Still, the steel 16234 models had a relatively conventional selection of dial colors to choose from, such as traditional white, deep blue, silver, and, as on this watch, black.
This beautiful neo-vintage Rolex Datejust 16234 dates from 2002 and was sold in 2005. The watch is in beautiful condition! The case, together with the 18K white gold fluted bezel, is razor-sharp and appears unpolished. We rarely come across examples like this anymore. The period-correct Jubilee bracelet is also in good condition and shows virtually little to no stretch. In addition, a small part of the sticker on the inside is still present, as is the original factory sticker on the watch’s case back.
Something else we’re very happy about is the black dial, featuring a Roman Minute Track, which gives this watch an extra elegant and sporty look. The reliable automatic 3135 movement has been checked and keeps time well, so a full service wasn’t necessary this time.
This beautiful vintage Rolex Datejust 16234 from 2002 with a black dial comes with its outer box, box, papers, folder, booklet, hang tags, and a 2-year warranty on the movement.

Rolex Datejust
The first Datejust was introduced in 1945 to celebrate Rolex's 40th anniversary, under reference 4467. It was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also displayed the date, which changed automatically after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with a fluted bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet, designed specifically for the Datejust. The date was displayed at the 3 o'clock position. Ten years later, in 1955, the date window was fitted with a Cyclops lens that magnified the date up to 2.5 times.
Most of Rolex's iconic models were produced as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purpose. This model was intended to be a classic, reliable, everyday watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.
