Cartier Santos Galbée 1567 Ladies / Papers + First Owner Invoice / Wempe Service History (2014)

The Cartier Santos is derived from the Cartier Santos-Dumont, designed for aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont. This watch was originally conceived by a legend in the watch industry, Alain-Dominique Perrin, who was CEO of Cartier from 1975 to 1998. In 1978, Cartier launched the gold-steel Santos under his leadership. The watch received an integrated strap instead of the traditional leather strap. Additionally, 18K gold was added to the case and strap, giving the watch an extra touch of luxury. This model was hugely popular in the 1980s.

In 1987, the Santos was completely revised, renamed, and relaunched as the Santos Galbée. The case received a more refined design with smoother lines and rounder lugs, allowing the watch to sit better on the wrist than its predecessor.

At 10 over 10, we also like to think of the ladies among watch enthusiasts! We have already sold several Santos Galbée watches for men, but we must not forget that this iconic model has also been made in a beautifully refined ladies' version. This makes us very happy as well.

The vintage Cartier Santos Galbée 1567 that we have here is the ladies' variant and has a case diameter of 24 x 35 mm. The case is still in beautiful condition, making all the original sharp lines and angles perfectly visible. The integrated Cartier bracelet is also in good condition, with light and acceptable stretch The period-correct white dial features the well-known Roman hour markers. These are the larger markers, which is correct for this reference and period. Of course, we must not forget the recognizable gold bezel, blue hands, and blue cabochon crown! All of this makes this watch wear like a beautiful refined piece of jewelry.

Additionally, this vintage ladies Cartier Santos is delivered with its original papers and first purchase receipt from Germany from the first owner. The watch was purchased by the previous owner at the official Cartier retailer Wempe in Germany in the year 2014. The previous owner has maintained the movement well, as confirmed by the original service papers and invoices from Wempe from the period of 2019 and 2021. Of course, the watch has also recently been checked by our watchmaker and fitted with a new battery. Besides the original papers, purchase receipt, and service history, the watch also comes with the corresponding Cartier booklet and the red Cartier holder for the booklet and papers.

Cartier

In 1847, Louis-François Cartier took over the jewelry workshop from his master. His sons and grandsons inherited the family business over the years. They opened stores in London and New York. In 1904, the Cartier brand was even appointed by King Edward VII of the United Kingdom as "the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers." Cartier became so popular that royal commissions came in from all over the world. 

Cartier is primarily known for its jewelry, but it also has a very rich history in watchmaking. In 1888, Cartier began making ladies' wristwatches. At that time, it was more common for men to choose the traditional pocket watch. Louis Cartier gave a good Brazilian friend, aviation pioneer Santos Dumont, a watch to wear during flights because he complained about the impracticality of using a pocket watch while flying. The Cartier Santos-Dumont was not only the first watch for men but also the first true pilot's watch.

The case of the Santos was apparently inspired by a square pocket watch that Cartier had made. The design of the dial heralds a shift towards the Art Deco style that would define the 1920s and 1930s. To this day, Cartier's design is determined by this. The case was designed to be robust, and the screws that held the glass were meant to evoke the legs of the new Eiffel Tower. The black Roman numerals also suggest the radial design of the streets and wide boulevards of Paris.
