Rolex Datejust 1600 'Blue Pie-Pan Dial' (1966)

The Datejust 16XX series was produced between the 1960s and 1970s. We all know the famous reference 1601 with a white gold fluted bezel and the 1603 with the steel engine-turned bezel. But of course, we must not forget the Datejust 1600, which is equipped with the so-called steel smooth bezel and fits perfectly within this lineup.

It is characteristic that the Datejust 16XX series was equipped with the so-called pie-pan dials. These models appeared in a variety of dial variants, some of which are currently rarer and more collectible than others. Think of silver, white, anthracite, champagne, black, and blue. Of course, we must not forget another important feature: these models were delivered with a sporty Oyster bracelet or an elegant Jubilee bracelet.

Here before us, we have a beautiful vintage Rolex Datejust 1600, equipped with a smooth bezel. This makes the watch a bit more understated and gives it a slightly sportier look. Something we are naturally very happy about is that this Datejust 1600 from the year 1966 features a blue sunburst pie-pan dial, which is still in perfect and completely original condition and is becoming rarer in this condition.

Characteristic and accurate for the period is the serif font printing, recognizable by the distinctive serifs on the letters, as well as the date display with the open 6 and open 9. The faceted hour markers, which create a beautiful sparkling light reflection, should not be forgotten either. Additionally, the dial and hands feature a lovely, even beige patina that gives the watch a warm appearance.

The 36 mm case is still beautifully sharp, making all the original corners and lines perfectly visible. Furthermore, this Datejust 1600 is equipped with a folded Jubilee bracelet, which, with acceptable stretch, is also in perfect condition.

The Rolex 1575 caliber has been fully serviced. This beautiful vintage Rolex Datejust 1600 with blue pie-pan dial from 1966 comes with a two-year warranty on the movement.

Datejust

In 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary under reference 4467. It was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also displayed the date and automatically changed it after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with the fluted bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet specially designed for the Datejust. The date was displayed at the 3 o’clock position. Ten years later, in 1955, the date window was fitted with a cyclops lens that magnified the date up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic Rolex models were produced to be used as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purpose. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and everyday watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.
