Rolex Datejust 1601/8 'Champagne Dial' 18K (Ca. 1973)

The Rolex Datejust reference 1601 was introduced in the 1960s and remained in production until around the late 1970s. This reference is part of the so-called “pie pan” dial generation and is known for its classic proportions of 36 mm. The Datejust 1601 was one of the first Datejust models with the automatic Rolex caliber 1570, a movement known for its reliability and accuracy.

Within this reference 1601, Rolex released various versions, including steel, two-tone, and fully gold variants in 18K, which were also referred to as 1601/8. The reference 1601/8 is the version in solid 18K yellow gold and was produced simultaneously with the other variants. This version was at the time the most luxurious option within this Datejust line and is now highly sought after by vintage Rolex watch collectors.

The Datejust 1601/8 we have here is made of 18K yellow gold. The 36 mm gold case is still beautifully sharp, along with the fluted bezel, making all original angles and lines perfectly visible. The gold stamps are also still clearly readable on the back of the lugs. Something that makes us very happy, and which you may also notice, is that around the case and between the grooves of the bezel, the gold has beautifully patinated, providing warm tones across the entire case and bezel of the watch. For us, it truly gives the ultimate vintage feel!

Additionally, this gold vintage Rolex Datejust 1601/8 features a champagne dial, which perfectly matches the warm gold tones of the case. This type of Datejust 1601 models originally should have a 'T Swiss T' pie-pan dial. The dial of this watch has likely been replaced during a previous service with a later or service dial, thus it features a 'T Swiss Made T' pie-pan dial. This does not detract from the fact that the combination is exactly as a subdued, classic gold vintage Datejust should be!

The reliable Rolex calibre 1575 had recently been serviced at the time of purchase, meaning we did not need to carry out a full service this time. Our watchmaker has thoroughly checked and tested the movement, ensuring the watch is in excellent technical condition. Ready for many years of enjoyment.

Furthermore, we have fitted this vintage Datejust 1601/8 with a new, smooth brown suede strap that perfectly matches the gold case. The strap is completed with a new 18K gold-plated Rolex buckle.

Rolex Datejust

In 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex under reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also indicated the date and automatically changed after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with a fluted bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet that was specially designed for the Datejust. The date was displayed at the 3 o'clock position. Ten years later, in 1955, the date window was equipped with a cyclops lens that magnified the date up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic models from Rolex were produced to be used as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purposes. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and everyday watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.
