Rolex Datejust 16014 'Silver Patina Dial' (1984)

The Rolex Datejust 16014 is the successor to the popular Datejust 1601 and was produced from around 1977 to 1988. Compared to the 1601, the 16014 received a more modern movement and several practical improvements, while the classic Datejust design was retained.

An important difference is that the 16014 was no longer supplied with the characteristic pie-pan dial, which is so well known from the 1601. Instead, the 16014 has a flat dial and was available in various colors, such as silver, black, blue, white, and champagne.

The 16014 is equipped with the automatic Rolex caliber 3035. This movement features a quick-set date function, allowing the date to be set independently of the time, making the watch much more user-friendly. Like its predecessor, the 16014 has a stainless steel case with an 18K white gold fluted bezel and a plexiglass crystal.

The vintage Datejust 16014 we have here dates from 1984 and, with its sharp 36 mm case and razor-sharp 18K white gold fluted bezel that creates a beautiful sparkle, is in excellent condition. What also makes us very happy is that this Rolex Datejust 16014 features a slightly later silver Tritium dial with a beautiful light beige patina. From different angles, the dial appears light silver or fully champagne, while from other angles a warm patina is visible in the center, surrounded by a light, beautiful even patina. A true eye-catcher and exactly how a vintage Datejust should be!

We must not forget the well-known elegant Jubilee bracelet, which is correct for the period of the watch (clasp code I). The bracelet shows acceptable stretch and is certainly still in good condition!

We purchased the watch from a collector, and the reliable 3035 movement was fully serviced about two years ago. Of course, we also had our watchmaker thoroughly inspect the watch. The movement was still in perfect condition, with an amplitude of 284 and a deviation of only +3 seconds per day, so a new service was not necessary. Ready to be worn for many more years!

Rolex Datejust

In 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to celebrate Rolex’s 40th anniversary under reference 4467. It was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also displayed the date and automatically changed it after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with the fluted bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet specially designed for the Datejust. The date was displayed at the 3 o’clock position. Ten years later, in 1955, the date window was fitted with a cyclops lens that magnified the date up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic Rolex models were produced to be used as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purpose. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and everyday watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.
