Rolex Datejust 16233 'Grey Roman Dial' Box + Papers (2002)

There is something special about collecting vintage Rolex watches. There are countless details that distinguish one piece from another, from unique case materials and case shapes to the refined aesthetics of the dial. These are the most prominent and immediately noticeable characteristics. You will also notice that this (neo)vintage Rolex 16233 with a grey dial and gold Roman hour markers is anything but a standard Datejust!

Together with the introduction of the Datejust, the iconic five-piece Jubilee bracelet was also launched. Initially, it appeared in solid gold, followed by the bicolor variant. At that time, buyers could choose between a Jubilee or an Oyster bracelet, although the Oyster is less common with Datejust 16233 models. The previous owner clearly had excellent taste! This watch is a perfect example of how an elegant vintage Datejust should look. The combination of the steel case, the 18K yellow gold bezel, the matte grey dial with Roman hour markers, and the gold steel Oyster bracelet creates an iconic, elegant, and at the same time sporty appearance.

This vintage Rolex Datejust 16233 with 'slate grey Roman dial' from 2002 is in beautiful condition. The 36mm stainless steel case, together with the 18K yellow gold fluted bezel and Oyster bracelet, is razor-sharp. The period-correct gold/steel Oyster bracelet shows light but acceptable stretch and some signs of wear, which are not considered disturbing. We have deliberately chosen to preserve the bracelet in its original condition. As can be seen in the photos, we purchased the watch while it still had some original stickers on it, including the caseback sticker, a case sticker on the side by the crown, and a sticker on the inside of the clasp. However, during the service of the 3135 movement, we decided to remove these stickers as they were no longer in good condition. This gives the watch a fresh appearance again. During the professional service, the movement received a full overhaul. The case and bracelet were preserved in their original condition, and the 18K yellow gold fluted bezel was polished (recut).

Datejust

In 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rolex under reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also indicated the date and automatically changed after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with a fluted bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet that was specially designed for the Datejust. The date was displayed at the 3 o'clock position. 10 years later, in 1955, the date window was equipped with a cyclops lens that magnified the date by up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic Rolex models were produced to be used as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purposes. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and everyday watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.
