Rolex Day-Date 18078 'Bark-finish / Champagne dial' (1984)

Most Rolex enthusiasts are familiar with the Day-Date reference 18038. This iconic watch was introduced by Rolex in the 1970s. In 1978, the reference was officially launched as a successor to the 1803 and brought several important updates, including the 3055 caliber with a quickset date function. During the same period, Rolex also introduced the Day-Date that we present here: the reference 18078, equipped with the so-called bark finish. This engraving technique resembles the pattern of tree bark and gives the watch a unique character. To this day, the Rolex Day-Date symbolizes style, luxury, and prestige.

The 36 mm vintage Rolex Day-Date 18078 that we offer dates from 1984 and is executed with the special bark finish on the bezel and links. A reference that we have not had in the collection at 10 over 10 before, and which we are of course very excited about. A true eye-catcher and a real collector's item for anyone who wants to distinguish their collection. This Day-Date 18078 is equipped with the classic, familiar tritium champagne-colored dial with a Roman minute track around it. The tritium on the dial and the hands has acquired a nice warm, light beige discoloration. On the original date disc, the word Tuesday shows a tiny spot of aging in the upper right corner; this is hardly noticeable and not disturbing to the naked eye. Considering the age of this watch, now 41 years old, this piece is in a beautiful overall condition!

The 18K yellow gold 36 mm case is thick, sharp, and excellently preserved. On the side of the case, near the Rolex winding crown, light oxidation is visible, giving it a lovely brown-purple hue. Many enthusiasts appreciate this detail, which is why we have consciously retained it. Of course, it can easily be wiped off if required. The 18K yellow gold bezel with bark finish is also in stunning condition! The 18K yellow gold Rolex President bracelet, which is attached to the case by two original gold push pins, shows some stretch but is still in good condition!

Rolex Day-Date

The first Rolex Day-Date, also known as the 'President', was introduced in 1956. To this day, it has remained the iconic status watch of Rolex. When Rolex launched the Day-Date, it was the first wristwatch to display both the full day of the week at the 12 o'clock position and the date at the 3 o'clock position. Another feature of the Day-Date is the famous President bracelet, which was specially designed for this model and has been supplied since its introduction. This bracelet has become almost as famous as the watch itself. The nickname 'President' became particularly popular after prominent world leaders, including U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson, were seen wearing a Day-Date.
