Rolex GMT-Master 16753 ''Root beer'' 1983
The iconic Rolex GMT-Master 1675 was in production until the year 1980 and was replaced thereafter by the reference 16750 and the gold steel reference 16753. Characteristic is the brown dial which features the small hour markers, the so-called ''nipple dial''. The dial has a beautiful brown glow and shows beautiful even discolouration, which is why the dial is also called ''lava nipple dial'' among watch collectors. A dial that makes us and many watch lovers enormously excited! The watch does not feature the famous Pepsi bezel with the red/blue colours, but the bezel with brown gold tones. This combined with the dial is also called ''Root beer'' among watch lovers. This is a reference to the sparkling drink from America which is made from sassafras tree, a root bark.
The Rolex GMT-Maser 16753 was fitted with a sporty gold steel oyster bracelet or as with this watch the elegant gold steel Jubilee bracelet which is in a nice condition with an acceptable stretch for its age. This vintage GMT features a 40mm case, which is nice and thick with sharp lugs. The 3075 movement with quick-set date function has been provided with a full service. Rolex GMT-Master
The first Rolex GMT-Master was introduced in 1954 under the reference 6542. The watch was housed in a classic steel Oyster case of 38 mm. The GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) function is a useful tool for pilots and those who have traveled extensively over different continents. The ability to track local and home time was especially useful for commercial pilots. The American airline Pan America Airlines (Pan Am) approached Rolex and asked them to develop a watch for pilots. This led to the development of the 6542. The iconic red-and-blue bezel made its debut on the 6542, known to collectors as the pepsi.
In 1959 Rolex launched their second series of the GMT-Master, the reference 1675. The case had been enlarged by 2mm and has a diameter of 40mm's. This reference would run until about 1980's.
